Snorkeling Key West

Hi, my wife and I just got into Key West. We have been here before but haven%26#39;t done any snorkeling out on the reef yet. Any suggestions. I was wondering about small charters that might allow more time than some of the bigger catamarans.

Snorkeling Key West

I have always liked Floridays for the simple reason they take fewer people out compared to the catamarans so there is a lot more one on one time with the crew. Yes, it does cost a bit more but it is well worth it.

If you like to try fishing also. This could be an option

Danger charters afternoon half day trip , Kayak/sail snorkel- Plenty of time in the water. You also get sunset on the way back in. They snorkel out at the sponge beds by the lakes. Plenty of fish and always good visibility.

Floridays - Ony take 16 people on their snorkeling trip and its a great price.

Another option is to combine your snorkeling with a trip to Dry Tortugas (either by plane or boat).

I%26#39;ve been on the uss floridays a few times and have had a great time. the captain (John i believe) is very friendly. a trip on a sail boat and snorkling for about $50 is a nice deal. they also provide beer and wine on the return into port. soda and h2o are provided too. plus, you can hang out down at the hyatt for the afternoon and nobody minds. just be curtious. forget the cats. they are so packed, they look like a refugee boat. (not to be mean but to make a point of what you may encounter)

locals call them cattle boats. Not all are that bad but many are.

Drive up to Bahia Honda. When you get in the park turn left. and go to the beach that way.

Just went the other day. Water was REALLY warm. Loved it. It was not crowed like a cattle call, there were no tourons ruining it for everyone by standing on a piece of reef. DId not worry about a long ride out and in. It was at my own pace and my own will.

I got to see a few cuda, an octopus, I found a skate that let me follow him around a little, some toad fish.

Snorkle over the seagrass. That is where you will find the most fish.

When you are done snorkeling there head over to the old Railroad. Still in the park, walk up on the bridge for some absoultly amazing picutures.

I just updated this to include a paragraph about whether or not to pre-book...

...and FWIW one of the most fun afternoons was spent on the Fury with between 110 and 114 people, a full house. (Canned) music, free beer and wine, a hot, sunny day. Think of it as a floating SWB with a bunch of people in bathing suits singing and not wanting to return.

Pjk

Morridin, Pjk has manicured the snorkeling post so that it is nearly perfect. Read it. It answers everything.

To be clear, Danger is not a ';reef trip,'; per se. Sebago, Fury, and Sunny Days all offer ';reef trips.'; Danger goes to younger areas in the Florida National Marine Refuge. and explores ';patcheries,'; which are developing patch reefs that are hatcheries for the young marine species.

BTW, you can ask pjk all about it in a couple of weeks - after I take him out on Danger (at last) when he gets here!

Like to thank everyone for their info and help. Today we tried out one of the catamarans and had an enjoyable time. I don%26#39; t know the name of the reef but it was pretty cool. The current was decent but we are pretty good swimmers and the fish were plentiful. maybe tomorrow we could try another company or spot.
