Sanibel Island Activities--Tortuga Beach Club

We are needing to use an exchange from Disney to Interval International. Although the exchange doesn%26#39;t need to be completed until January 08, school schedules and other obligations require we use it before August.

A two bedroom unit at the Tortuga Beach Club on Sanibel Island is available. Our family would include my husband, 11 yr old daughter, and myself would be vacationing. We have enjoyed the beach at Vero Beach but wonder about the resort and what there is to do in the Sanibel area.

My family enjoys the beach but are concerned about 7 days of beach. Are there rentals available (such as jet ski, etc.). Am I correct that the waves are not big enough for her to boogie board?

We have enjoyed the Disney Resort at Vero Beach before.

I like Tortuga a lot- I think it is one of the prettier small complexes on the island with a great pool and you can walk next door to the Sanibel Inn for the pool bar our restaurant. Definitely a good choice!

Exploring the Insider Pages on the Sanibel Overview page will give you lots of ideas but a week on Sanibel is a very nice week for the family: biking, shelling, shopping, eating, boat rentals, kayaking in the refuge, Shell Museum.... we always feel like the time to leave day comes too quickly!

';or restaurant'; (it%26#39;s not ours).

Hmm.. mysanibelrestaurant.. has a nice ring to it, no?

The Gulf is usually very quiet and calm, unlike the Atlantic. Shelling is the major beach activity. That said, you can take the quiet drive up to Captiva just north of Sanibel [about 30 minutes] and rent sailboards, go parasailing, or take a wave runner tour. Canoe and kayak rentals are available on both Sanibel and Captiva. Tram or kayak tours of Ding Darling are fun and educational. Captiva Cruises offers trips to various out islands.

Plenty to do.

We too thought a whole week sounded long when we first started going to Sanibel. Now, 2 weeks is more like it, and we would stay longer if we could. There are tears in our eyes as we leave the island if we only get 1 weeks time, 2 weeks and it is easier to leave.

We have 3 kids, so it is difficult for us to have them bring friends on the trip with us. However with it just being you two and your daughter, maybe bringing a friend with her would ensure a boredom-free vacation for her. Your condo would definitely be big enough.

Sanbiel is addicting. There are not many places like it, and it is special.

I have read about renting bikes for going around the island. I also read about going to Costa Cayo for snorkeling. Are jet skis, water skiing, etc available anywhere?

Someone also mentioned kayaking in the nature preserve???However, you are talking to one big scaredy cat regarding snakes and alligators. Am I correct in assuming those are a possibility (while not necessarily probable but still possible)?

I appreciate any references to reputable captains for deep sea fishing (something none of us have ever considered before) or other excursions and activiites. Also references for places to eat would be great!

Thanks--we arrive on July 13 at the Tortuga Beach Club.

As Tourmaline said, you can drive up to Captiva, very close, and rent jet skis, parasailing ect...

The Ding Darling Wildlife Perserve takes up about about 1/3 of the island. They offer cruises around Tarpon bay and you can also rent kayaks, or canoes. Alligators and snakes do not come and crawl into your boat. Just don%26#39;t go wading in the water and the creatures will leave you alone.

It is actually a very peaceful experience.

Boogie boards are sold everywhere. The gulf is for the most part quite calm, no surfing. However, boogie boards are still fun. At high tide you get good enough waves to ride a boogie board.

We leave tomorrow after a week. You can read my post under ';Sad to Leave :('; that I wrote tonight (6/29) about all we did.

Keep in mind that July will be HOT and biking is fun, but it was hot for my kids. We always brought tons of water with us. The trails are fun and easy. We biked to the beach one day, out to dinner one day, and from our condo, which is right next to Tortuga, to the Shell Museum.

I am terrified of snakes, alligators, etc. I even wrote a post asking about them. But we didn%26#39;t se ONE alligator even at Ding Darling. We did take a tram ride. No way was I doing it on bike or foot! The guide was Andy, a retiree, who was so very informative. We learned a lot more than we would have had we tried to do it ourselves.

There are several beaches to explore. Each one has its own personality. The shops are fun. Captiva is captivating. Your week will be over before you know it.

Have a blast!

I have been to both Disney Vero Beach and Sanibel and you will LOVE Sanibel. There is so much more to do and see. I personally prefer the calm surf in Sanibel over Vero Beach. Looking for shells will keep you busy and is so addicting. My kids, 12, 10, 8 %26amp; 6 are even hooked! Buy a shell reference card at one of the gift shops, so you get to know the shells you are finding. Rent bikes, take a trip through Ding Darling, a trip to Cayo Costa is a MUST, take a dolphin cruise or a private boat charter, and of course, find your favorite places to eat. You will not be bored in Sanibel.
