hire car upgrade

hi we are flying into sanford airport 6 people in total 4 adults 2 kids we have got a car in with our holiday package but when i looked on paperwork it seems these only have 7 seats but no boot as 2 of the seats take the boot space and may need to pay to upgrade to be able to fit your luggage in do they ever offer to upgrade your car free of charge i wasnt plannong on paying any extra for our car as we wont really be using it as we are staying on disney property

hire car upgrade

Usually if the sized car you reserved is sold out you will get a free upgrade to the next available size up. Otherwise you have to pay for the upgrade. What kind of car did the paperwork say you got? Unless it is a sports car, I know of no car that we have here, where the two back seats totally occupy the boot space.

hire car upgrade

its a minivan i beleive it will be like the people carriers we have here in britain that have 7 seats but 2 of them collapse giving boot space

Sometimes it pays to be the last one to go into the car hire place, when all the economy ones have gone they have no option but to upgrade you for free.

Don%26#39;t forget you can always call into any branch of the car hire co. if you have problems and they will see what they can do.

If its a 7 seat mini van it should have enough room in for 6 of you.

If ';You ask'; for a up grade they will charge you. They will also re charge the insurance . Which will make it expensive it might not appear that way when you are stood at the counter wanting to get off but when you get home take a look at you credit card statement.

This is what you need to do.

Do not ask for a up grade. explain that you need 7 seats (even though there is only 6 of you) and luggage space.

Take the keys they give you and look at the car , it may be bigger than you think.

If it OK drive off. if its not go back and ask them to change it for a different 7 seater.

If they wont try to manage with it to your hotel.

The next day find another different rental station and take the car in.

Tell them the steering is pulling to the right, the steering wheels wobbling. you didnt not it till you got om the motorway .

They will change it , ask for a different model then.

I often change mine, sometimes just cos I dont like it.

Resist paying for a up grade.

xr great thanks will try that it states ther will be enough room for pasengers but not for luggage it should be ok getting to our destination its just for the trip back with double luggage its the first time i have been to orlando and have booked with tcd i know thats like a swear word on this site lol but hey hav taken money from us for double luggage and then told us vehicle wont be able to carry passengers and all luggage im really annoyed

Enlighten me on this ... since when does a travel company charge you for double luggage, that%26#39;s the airline%26#39;s job. And you shouldn%26#39;t have overweight coming here, it%26#39;s the return when that happens. LOL.

Chuts,

With a Travelcity package you can pay extra and receive a 40kg luggage allowance.....so you can shop.....and shop......

We are in the same situations as you - 4 adults and 2 kids - leaving in 66.5 hrs time (but I%26#39;m not counting - honest!!) from Manchester

I%26#39;ve read in the TCD stuff that arrived with my tickets that you can drop your luggage off at their place in BV (for $10 per person if booked before hand or $15 on the day you leave). This means that we%26#39;re still able to get around on our last day, without the worry of the luggage disappearing.

Maybe something you could look in to ??

edwards sounds good might just do that as i said earlier is it only the return leg that we will have so much weight not bringing alot from england

Cuts; You will see a lot on here about Travel City Direct TCD.

It Is both a Travel agent, And a Airline. The Travel Agency flys its own passengers On its own Planes, and sells direct to the public.

ie No other travel agency could book flights . holidays etc for clients. But more recently buy outs and take overs have muddied the water a bit and the Airline is is now called XL airlines, but some of the planes still have travelcity on them. It might still be on and the same company doing a paper exercise.

With this company all passengers get a bigger pitch seat. and while they do have 3 classes of passengers these Boeing 747 load 545 passengers as against Virgin%26amp; BA 454. the front cabins which would be given over to first class passengers with copious amount of room they have put more seat in them , The up stairs which normally serves as a cocktail lounge bar is seated out with seats with a bit more room than economy . So this is how it makes its money selling cheaper seats. Nearly a 100 more.

It gives 20 kg luggage allowance to economy seats but for 拢15 you can get 40 kg each way if you want. MY travel want 拢45 each way for an extra 5Kg. so this is a good deal.

Tides if you ring TCD you can check in your luggage early on the day of departure for 拢5 pp. At their office in Lake Buena Viista outlets Mall on Highway 535. So you dont have to carry you vasts amount of shopping to the airport.. You will also get your boarding cards there so you dont have to check in either, You can go the parks for the day if you wish.

TCD deal with dollar and I find them good to deal with. But if you should need to swap your car there is Dollar rental station on 192 not far from Old town its Next to ';Race Track Filling station'; .

I would listen to these critics we have on here and make you own mind up. I have always found them fine, and hard to beat on price.

But for some they pay Ford Prices and expect a Rolls Royce to turn up.

The other thing about this charter company you do not have to pay extra for meals, drinks, and head sets. And that can make another 拢100 difference for a family of 4.

They dont have seat back TV%26#39;s but that%26#39;s not an issue for me as i dont watch them anyway.

  • Trip report Aug. 11-18th Treasure Island

Hey guys! We just got back from Panama City Beach last night.

We did fly the daughter/family into the Panama City airport and back out. They had connecting flights in Atlanta. It worked out great. Was expensive-the tickets cost $300.00 more than the weeks stay at Treasure Island. However, I think it was worth it since they get impatient riding. In fact, they had a fit because it took so long to get from out condo to Mike%26#39;s Diner! (It wasn%26#39;t long at all!)

Treasure Island was great. We had a two bedroom condo with a sleeper sofa and bunks right off the dining room on the second floor. It was decorated well and the beds were very comfortable. Balcony was large and had table/chairs and two lounge chairs.

Elevators were very fast and never had to wait.

We had a bit of seaweed the first two days and then the water cleared up. My grandaughter got stung by a jelly fish the 2nd day. Thank goodness I had been reading all the reports and had bought some Safe Sea.

Our favorite activities were the Pirate Cruise and the Swim with the Dolphins program at Gulf World. It was very expensive to pay for the two grandchildren to swim with the dolphins, but it was worth it. My grandson said it was the most awesome day of his whole life.

The Pirate Ship cruise was wonderful as well. We went to Shell Island one day. The waves were so rough it was hard finding shells.

We had a wonderful meal at Scampy%26#39;s the first night. I%26#39;[m allergic to most seafood, so I had the charbraised steak. It was wonderful! Everyone enjoyed their meal. I was afraid to eat at Captain Jacks after reading the reviews posted here. My husband insisted so we went early. It was very good. In fact, the family wanted to go again, so we did the next night. Hammerhead Fred%26#39;s was wonderful as well. I had the strongest margarita ever! Their t-shirts are really cute. Of course, we couldn%26#39;t leave without visiting Schooners and Pineapple Willy%26#39;s. Schooners has the greatest atmosphere and the food was good. We all had the ribs at Pineapple Willy%26#39;s and had enough for lunch the next day. We also bought more t-shirts. They had a good selection marked down to $10.00.

All in all, it was a great trip. Thanks for all your posts that helped me plan!

Trip report Aug. 11-18th Treasure Island

So you enjoyed Schooners? I%26#39;ve wanted to go there, might just have to give it a whirl this next time. Where have I been I%26#39;ve not heard of Scampys til tonight, and now this is the second time I%26#39;ve seen the name and good things about it.

Trip report Aug. 11-18th Treasure Island

Scampy%26#39;s does not look like much from the outside. It is right next to the Treasure Island parking garage. But everyone was happy with their food. I ordered the steak, but everyone else ordered seafood and said it was delicious. Beware that they do not have a bar! I asked for a mixed drink and they told me they didn%26#39;t make them. They did have beer and I think wine. I did enjoy Schooners, but the others in my party did not. The food was good, but average. I just love the atmosphere. It reminds me of Spring Break when I was young! When we left , the band was just starting up. My son-in-law said it wasn%26#39;t a restaurant, it was a bar!

    Island Music???

hi guys!! we will be on Sanibel Island next Thurs-Mon. The island isn%26#39;t notorious for its nightlife, so we were thinking of perhaps checking out Ft Myers for some good times/vibes/music....does anyone know of a bar/club/restaurant that offers some ';island music ie-calypso/reggae/soca music';...??

    ~cheers

    Island Music???

I believe that they have reggae music on FMB at the Bridge restaurant on Sunday afternoons. Don%26#39;t know of any other calypso/reggae type anywhere else. Maybe someone else will be able to help you. Have a nice visit.

    Island Music???

The Bridge%26#39;s %26#39;Reggae Night%26#39; is on Sundays and goes from 6-11pm. You can go to Junkanoo%26#39;s after that (or any weekend night) - but it tends to be more hip hop music. The Yard Dogs play at Parrot Key on Fridays I think - they are kind of a cajun-sounding band but lots of fun. They definately have a following here! And Casey%26#39;s Ally - behind Topps Supermarket - is a local hangout with awesome bands. It is a smoky place but if you don%26#39;t mind that you%26#39;ll enjoy it. The Beached Whale used to be the place to go for music since Jimmy B%26#39;s was torn down, but now the Whale is closed for a few months for remodeling. When you get here, pick up a local paper from the beach (not Sanibel%26#39;s newspaper) and they%26#39;ll be a listing of where all the music is. You%26#39;ll have much more fun on FMB at night than Sanibel. We drove over there for ice cream tonight with the kids an it%26#39;s soooo boring over there!!!

    FMBWaterSports

    Cheri

I have always liked the music at Dusseldorfs and Cabasacas on the weekends. The are located just to the left as you come over the bridge. They usually have just one guy playing guitar but they are really good. They play classic rock.

    Enjoy!

    I cannot wait

OK,,I think I have a problem, I cannot walk by my computer without checking this forum, I can%26#39;t stop reading all the topics about the condo/resort I%26#39;m staying at, I read every word about every place to eat, LOL tell me do I have a problem or am I just excited? You all have so much good info and I love reading what you say. Sooooooooooooo here%26#39;s to HAPPY vacationing whenever you go!!!

    I cannot wait

Well, its not cocaine or gamblimg so don%26#39;t think of it as a problem. I try not to.

    I cannot wait

LOL, your quite the character!!! Yes your right tho, there are worse addictions!!! I don%26#39;t leave for 6 weeks am thinking I should be well prepared from this forum by then! And I read Manic that your a Summit man, I%26#39;m staying there, and reguardless of what I read I can%26#39;t wait, seems like a great location with all amenities I want %26amp; need. Reading on here tells me doesn%26#39;t matter if the resort is old or new someone has an issue with something, and most likely rightfully so, but doesn%26#39;t mean it applies all the way around! Now I guess my biggest concern is going to be tropical storms or hurricanes, and that can%26#39;t be controlled,,darn it!!! Again ENJOY!!!

Yeah I am a Summit man for the most part. We have stayed at ';the best'; places like Emerald Beach with hardly any working amenities, Calypso with no hot tub while The Summit has three, Marriott Bay Point which was crappy back then. We finally decided we did not care what the stuck-up people write about The Summit. We are back to the place I fell in love with in 1988, It has had some bad times but the new ganeral manager(Vance) has made improvements and added amenities. I have gotten to know most of the employees and 95% are super nice. We go often but I still pull up the Schooners web cams every day. Also go to www.sandtunes.com/tropical.htm It is the best weather site for that area. Right now he has about 10 different radars of various types tracking Dean. Check it out and add it to your daily fix.

You will love the Summit! Great beach, great views, 2 pools...how wrong can you go?? And alot of the units are very nice! I%26#39;ve stayed in my share of the not so much nice ones too, but it sure didn%26#39;t detract from holiday! Some people complain no matter what! I will be at the Summit this week. You want me to go check out your unit? Haha...I really would try!!

Miss Toe, you have a GREAT vacation!! It%26#39;s nice to hear positive comments from people who are ';repeat'; visitors to the Summit. Have you ever stayed in 621? Where have you stayed? Can%26#39;t wait to read your review. Have a Safe and Happy trip!!!!

I%26#39;ve not stayed in 621 that I recall. Are you renting from VRBO or from Summit? You sound like me, when I%26#39;m planning a vacation I get a one track mind. When are you going down for your vacation?

    yes, yes, and no

    tv

Check with the owner or the management of the villa. However, even the poorest excuse for cable TV should have all three. And ABC is a regular network; even without cable you can get it, and I think the same applies to Univision.

Or is univision the Spanish speaking channel? I don%26#39;t watch it, but if so, then yes.

Its certainly one of the Spanish speaking channels.

Welcome back EddieK. You have been missed.

    Family Travel Insurance

Can anyone advise best company to purchase travel insurance with for a family of 2 adults %26amp; 2 teenagers with the best cover %26amp; price. We%26#39;re going in 6 weeks ... Aargh!!!

    Family Travel Insurance

    Hi

Have you got an account with Halifax/bank of scoland? they have a current account called the ultimate current account if you pay 拢10.00 per mth you get free worldwide family travel insurance unlimted ...covers gold clubs skining etc...also you get other benifits plus 6.17% interest on your balance up to 拢2500...

    Family Travel Insurance

sorry that was meant to be golf clubs lol

try columbus direct . i have just booked with them for a years travel insuance. they do a couple of different options. i scanned the internet for days and found these to be the best

    Try Tescos.

We have a yearly policy and my husband is diabetic so we got this covered.Make sure you get worldwide cover.

I always use www.moneysavingexpert.com they will give you prices and links to the companies, we usually end up with Travel insurance direct. 拢54 for a family of 5 this year, single policy.

Hi we have prudencial, had them for 3 yrs now world wide.family of 5拢135 , i declare my disality and daughter, so i think its a good deal.

Another vote for Columbus Direct, cost 拢85 for 2 adults and 2 teenagers for a whole year. Was 拢78 for 2 week trip for the same people.

    Have a look at: www.insureandgo.com or www.atlasdirect.net

Funnily enough I had a look at MSN Money earlier this morning where they had an article about rip-off travel insurance. The consensus was never to take out travel insurance with your travel agent, they%26#39;re 91% more expensive than you need to pay.

They also had a profile where you fill out with your basic requirements, which I did as I haven%26#39;t bought my insurance yet, and InsureandGo.com came out top, followed by Norwich Insurance.

I used InsureandGo for my Barcelona trip last year. Looks like I%26#39;ll be using them again for Orlando. I like MSN%26#39;s money tips. They usually make sense.

used Insure and Go last two years - very competitive annual travel policy.

  • Seahorse Landing, Cedar Key

My husband and I have stayed at the Seahorse Landing several times over the last sixteen years. Seahorse Landing is a beautiful place to stay on the island. You can view the colorful sunsets from your own private porch. The rooms are each decorated in their own unique style. The property is clean and beautifully landscaped. The pool and Jacuzzi have always been clean and clear. We would highly recommend the SEAHORSE LANDING to all that come to visit the quiet, endearing town of Cedar Key, Florida.

    Sue and David, Tampa, Florida

    Seahorse Landing, Cedar Key

I have not stayed at Seahorse Landing, it looks nice but I will agree that Cedar Key is an endearing town. We go every year for the Seafood Festival in October, it is a lot of fun with lots of fresh seafood (not all fried), arts %26amp; crafts and a great parade. We participate in the parade each year, we are called the Crab Crew and won first place last year. You can see us making fools of ourselves at www.crabcrew.com It is truly a slice of ';Old Florida'; and a great community.

    santa maria suites?

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone has stayed in the santa maria suites? We are going down in November with another couple and there werent any rooms left at Best western (where we usually stay) since its the boat race weekend. I found it through the southernmost hotel website (they were booked too!) and it looks nice. I do remember them being built when I was there a while back.

But was wondering if anyone had any first hand information or opinions!! thanks

    santa maria suites?

I haven%26#39;t seen anyone post on the forum that they have stayed there. But the reviews here on TA are good. I saw it in June, it is very nice and the location is good.

  • Trip to the coast

We plan on taking an airboat ride in Christmas. Where is nice to go to the beach for the afternoon afterwards? We would want somewhere to chill, perhaps a bit of shopping or browsing, then a family meal.

    Trip to the coast

More info needed. Where have you booked the airboat ride? Is this trip mainly a visit to Disney World and the airboat ride a side trip? How long is your stay? How many in the party?

    Trip to the coast

Oh, did you mean Christmas, the town in Florida or is the visit at Christmas time?

We thought we%26#39;d go to Old Fashioned Airboats (or something like that!), we%26#39;re going to Orlando on Thursday. As we%26#39;ll be there for Labor Day weekend we thought we%26#39;d head out of theme parks for a day at the coast.

Just about all the beaches will be crowded on Labor Day weekend. Probably your best bet is the 1-hour drive to Cocoa Beach.

    depends what you want.

Clearwater and St petes are busy and built up. Somewhere like Anna Maria Island is a bit further ( 1.5 hours drive) but far nicer - no high rise, no chain restaurants.

I%26#39;d do the airboat thing, and the beach things on differnt days maybe. And the above poster was right about LD weekend, you need a larger beach with more parking than St Petes/Clearwater as I think they will be heaving. the Atlantic has more long stretches of beach with carparking I%26#39;m thinking.

    New Villa's

    Hi,

Does anyone know where I can view all the new villas. The reason being is that I find the decor in the older ones very dated.

We want a new modern furnished villa.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!!

    New Villa's

There are %26#39;new%26#39; villas ie a couple of years old in Terre Verde, Windsor Hills, and Reuinion that I can think of. They seem spotless the ones I%26#39;ve seen.

Even some older villas have nice stuff, some have even been refurbished, so don%26#39;t let that out you off as the nighbourhoods as they get older get greener and shadier which helps in the heat. To find one of these, rent a specific villa from the owner or a small broker, rather than getting a %26#39;potluck%26#39; one thru a tour operator. that way you can insure the quality by viewing the photos, reading recs from past visitors, and checking the equipment lists etc.

    New Villa's

    Hi

Have stayed at Reunion and can recommend it. Obviously villas anyway will vary in how they are decorated and furnished - since emost villas are owned independently.

Personally I can recommend this villas at Reunion (http://www.windsorpalmsflorida.com): we stayed there last year and are back for a week this year. The whole house is beautifully decorated and furnished (see virtual tour - http://domain241723.sites.fasthosts.com/virtualtours/kenny556/bb/index.htm). The pool is fairly small, but absolutely beautiful - that may or may not be an issue.

Also check out other villas and condos at Reunion for rental direct from owners on VRBO - vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/鈥eunion-resort

    UCC

UCC - Wow I love that villa. I can%26#39;t afford to pay that much though. Max is about 拢1000 for 2 weeks.

    Any ideas???

When the villas are purchased they are all furnished from a package and therefore all look similar.Generally speaking it takes a bit of dosh to change the decor from this starter package and a lot of new home owners can%26#39;t afford to do it until they have been in the rental market a while .Owners that have been going a while and do the bookings themselves generally do up grade and change the furnishings as they have the $$ to do it . The really modern furniture probably wouldn%26#39;t last 2 minutes in a rental home as it needs to be robust as it takes a battering .I would not get hung up on the furnishings but tend to think more about what facilities the home has .

    Hi

    Try this - www.orlandosfinest.com/5b-Reunion%20AH.htm

Have a look at the VRBO properties I linked to. Specifically:

    - http://www.vrbo.com/40897 (same here http://www.florida-holidays.biz/main/index.htm)

All are a little bit outside of your budget, BUT you may be able to haggle the owner down a bit ESPECIALLY if you are looking for a couple of weeks rental. On rentals direct with owners, don%26#39;t be put off trying to barter - they will generally be willing to compromise if you are staying for a reasonable period...

Reunion also has some very nice condos and some townhouses - although those wont have private pools.

    Any help?

Try this site, lots of newish villas on here. Its one of the most reputable sites out there.

    www.orlandovillas.com

Not all villas come with the straight out of the factory look as described above either and you will see this on the website above.

Butterfly -the reason being they are all rent by owner who know the value of their homes and the importance of up grading and doing something different .I agree Orlandovillas is a good site.

';Insiders usually live in Key West'; That is not necessarily true. While I live here I don%26#39;t stay in hotels or B%26amp;Bs often so can%26#39;t really offer an insider%26#39;s view.

    what are Insider Pages?????????

    So that%26#39;s where they are!

I think the problem with the insider pages might be that you have to be an insider to find them.

There is a huge amount of info there but it%26#39;s difficult to find and can go out of date. If I do a new one I%26#39;ve been trying to not post costs as these can change, but post web addresses so that the people can find costs, times, locations, for themselves. And try to keep the info to one page, just for convenience.

They are also nice because they sometimes contain a list of things, happy hours, breakfasts, snorkeling trips, in one place. Asking can get the same info but spread out among 62 posts with dups and even wrong info.

Try www.thinkflorida.co.uk, they have loads of villas and town homes around the Disney area. Some good special offers too.

Another good one, with some great villas, you deal direct with the owners and know exactly what you are getting before you get there.

Another site you can book direct with the owners is

  • How much for a villa and flght please!!

We are hoping to go next year and I have been looking at the villa option. We have never done this before, does anyone know approx. how much it is for flight and villa. By first choice its going to be over 拢3500 for four of us. I just wondered if anyone has done this and if it was cheaper doing it independently. We will be hoping to stay in the Kissimmee area.

How much for a villa and flght please!!

I find it is definately cheaper to book it yourself. There are loads of villas for rent, we recently stayed in one booked via www.just-florida-villas.co.uk. There are plenty of airlines to choose from, depending on the airport you want to fly from. I personally usually stick to Virgin, although sometimes if its really cheap I will fly via New York with Continental. I%26#39;ve heard that MyTravel are quite competitive from Manchester to Orlando. I always look on expedia.co.uk first for flight combinations, but then book direct with the airline as it%26#39;s usually a bit cheaper.

    Hope this helps.

How much for a villa and flght please!!

I%26#39;ve done it cheaper than that buying scheduled flights w/BA and Virgin. For 5.

Check the prices, and look for sale periods. The flight for 4 (you don%26#39;t say how many kids/adults) will be your highest cost. Check prices now using travelsupermarket.com, and a bucket shop like trailfinders. Ask about %26#39;Tour inclusive%26#39; fare. Sometimes, you can get a flight and car, cheaper than the flight alone. Try it and see. Then compare the prices you find with the ones you find next month. Both BA and Virgin have big sales then. And th bucket shops can ususally met/beat them. And you can get another 10% off as a shareholder.

Thanks for the advice, I will certainly do the checking of flights etc. It is probably too early yet as we want to go in August 08. The flight will be for 4 adults as my children are 19 and 16 at time of holiday. Thanks again for your answers I do appreciate it.

    Pauline

Sales ofr Aug 08 flights can be had in Jan 08, and even March. But look in September. If you book with a bucket shop such as trailfinders and pay a depsit, you might benefit of the flight price lowers.

Once you%26#39;ve booked your flight, that%26#39;s when you look for a villas to match. Too many book accomodation/time off work first, but flight price is the real trick in keeping costs down.

Ok Amanx, I will do that. There are lots of fabulous villas to see on the internet and it is so tempting to book one! But I will do as you advise and get the flights sorted first. On travel supermarket they are going for 拢600+ at the moment. What price can I expect to pay if I buy in September? I have really got the bug to go back to Orlando, we went a couple of weeks ago by First Choice late deal and we only paid 拢500 each (one week) and that included a car, and stayed at Quality Inn Maingate west. We loved it that much I definitely want to go again but for two weeks and with better accommodation.

You can get a 3 bed 2 bath town house villa on a resort site form 拢350-380 a week.

Depending when you want to go will have a big effect on the price . Last week in April all May and last 3 weeks Sept first 2 in October. you should be able to get seats 拢350- 拢400. with the charter companies. TCD, My travel. Thomas Cook.. . Monarch. Thompson%26#39;s

拢210-拢250 for a car with full insurance,

With some one like TCD you will probably get a fly drive package Flight plus car with full insurance and a tank full of fuel for the same price as some other will offer you seat only.

My Fly drive in Sept with 4 adults with TCD works out at 拢350 pp total

Some of the above charge extra for meals, drinks, headsets, snacks

I am more interested in the final total sum not how the company does its paperwork.

Last time I looked in August, flights to Antigua on BA or Virgin were 650-700 each. they went down to about 440-480 during the sale. That%26#39;s just an example.

Then after checking online with both BA and V, I called Trailfinders and they got it for me even cheaper (by a few pounds a person) and sometimes going to FL they get it for you even cheaper than the online price and it includes the price of a car! (that%26#39;s the %26#39;tour inclusive%26#39; fare). Then you don%26#39;t have to pay the full whack, just a deposit pp instead of the whole thing like you do online. Try it allways, and do go to travelsupermarket.com as that%26#39;s the only place I know of that compares the price of charters with scheduled and with the bucketshops like travelbag and trailfinders. Have fun shopping around.

If you have a spreadsheet programe like EXCEL, do a shet on your holiday. I write down each fare/price I get in there and have it calcualte the totals for me. I make a new line when I find the same thing cheaper and it%26#39;s easy to see how much you save overall, and if you add in everything, you can keep a track on the total cost. I do the same with the dif accomodations I find and carhire, airport hotels etc.

Whats hot during the sultry days of September?

We%26#39;re going to be in Miami during the week of Sep 11-14. What%26#39;s going on for a couple in our mid 30%26#39;s. Being a former resident I remember that the summer months is off season. Other than Miami Spice (which we plan to attend a few times), where are the locals going to enjoy themselves? Which restaurant/lounges have the best nights on Wed, Thur and Friday? BTW, please no dance techno clubs. Been there, done that, hope to never be there again (ha-ha). Thanks in advance.

Whats hot during the sultry days of September?

I prefer to frequent where the locals go rather than where the tourists go. Monty%26#39;s always has a good happy hour until 8pm ... food is decent and live music in the evenings. Smith %26amp; Wollensky is nice on the weekend nights between 4-7 ... sit out back and watch the cruise ships sail past. Doraku has a great happy hour on Friday ... 2-4-1 drinks and appetizers and a free sushi buffet.

Whats hot during the sultry days of September?

Tenniselbow 22- Thanks for the info. We also like to visit the places where the locals hang out. The Friday evening sushi %26amp; drinks sounds like a winner.

Where restaurants will you choose from Miami Spice, I will also be in the area mid september.

    Labor Day Weekend Must See's & Do's

Hi ~ My husband and I (early 30%26#39;s) just booked a trip for the Ritz over labor day weekend ..... we have never visited the area and would love feedback on what we should see and do and places to eat while we are there for just 3 days ........ thanks so much!!!

    Labor Day Weekend Must See's %26amp; Do's

I would definately visit Fort Clinch and the small town of Fernandina. You can take a horse drawn carriage around the town if you like. ALso, make sure you visit the Old Palace Saloon and have a cold beer, very interesting place. You can also rent horses and ride along the beach which is fun. You will love the area.

    Labor Day Weekend Must See's %26amp; Do's

ohhhhhh the horse drawn carriage sounds wonderful ......... do the drivers tell you historic things about the town, or just ride you around :) ......... also, are there boutique shops anywhere?

Kelly, Yes, the drivers will give you details of all the history of the area. They also have the horse drawn carriage rides at Fort Clinch certain times of the year, I would check that out too, it is a very interesting place. Once I was standing on the shore of the little beach at Ft. Clinch and the ground started to shake and just a few yards away, in the water, a submarine emerged, it was so cool. The Navy base is in Mayport, near there.

There are some shops and antique stores in the town. There is also a Wharf so you can see the shrimp boats come in and walk around. The old Train Depot is fun to look at too. I know you will have fun. Make sure you have a Black and Tan at the Irish Pub!

thank you!!! ........ where is the irish pub? do they have good food?

I remembered the name, it is O%26#39;Kanes Irish Pub, it is right on the main street you cant miss it. We have had fish %26amp; chips and shepard pie before and thought it was really good but then again that was after a couple of black and tans. Make sure you stop by ';Sliders'; on the way to Fernandina from the Ritz on AIA. It doesnt always get got reviews but it is worth stopping in for a drink, it%26#39;s an interesting place. Also, while you are in Fernandina you could rent scooters at the Florida House B%26amp;B to cruise around. They have a cute litle pub in there as well. There are a lot good places to eat, it has been a couple of years since I have been there so you would be better off asking for some suggestions at the Ritz when you arrive. Have fun!

    thanks!!!

If you%26#39;re interested in the history of the Island and Fernandina, visit the History Museum (old jail). They also have historic downtown tours with docents that are very good. If you%26#39;re an ';on the water'; type, call the local sailing school (Windward Sailing) and take a late afternoon/sundown sail and see Cumberland Island from the water. The only two ocean side restaurants left are Sliders (awful food/service) and The Surf. Recommend the latter for a nice outdoor lunch. Although there is now a Starbucks on the Island, a locally owned coffee shop/micro-roaster is the kofe hous also on Sadler Road. It%26#39;s a great place for either your morning coffee and pastry or your afternoon pick me up latte. The downtown (Green Turtle Bar also good nite time hang out for the 30-somethings) is always fun as well as Ft. Clinch, all mentioned earlier. If you want to see the Island from the air, you can also take an aerial tour. Call the local airport%26#39;s Fixed Base Operator, McGill Aviation and ask if they can arrange one for you. It will give you a good perspective on the Island%26#39;s location. All in all, you%26#39;ll love everything about the Island.

    Hotel Help please

I%26#39;m looking at coming o Orlando next year with my friend, we%26#39;re both 30 yrs old and looking for a hotel close to the attractions but also close to some decent night life. We like to party hard, any help would be great.

    Hotel Help please

    Hi BigStu78.

    big_J_58 here from Lincoln.

If you want decent hotel look at the web site for Radisson Barcello hotel . On I-Drive. It%26#39;s a 5 min drive by car to Universal Studios and Islands Of Adventure or IOA for short. It%26#39;s got great coasters and the night life is I think right up your street.

Type in universal city walk orlando on your home page and see for your self.

Or down town disney orlando. Pretty much the same thing but further to travel. If you stay on I-Drive it%26#39;s about 25 min by car.

If you like a drink or 3 take a cab HONESTLY. Take photo i%26#39;d if you look younger than 21 or you won%26#39;t be drinking atall LOL

    Hope this helps.

    Hotel Help please

Or stay in LBV near DTD at one of the suite hotels like Doubletree. Walking didstance to the nightlife there, and short cheap taxi ride to other places like Bahama Breeze etc.

depending on your budget would be worth looking at Hard Rock hotel - walk to City Walk, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure and they often have special events at the hotel ( bands etc )

That sounds good to me (if I were 30 again and without 3 boys lol!). Being near both Citywalk and upper I drive would be good.

Come to think of it, they%26#39;d probably like the Hard rock as well, but with having to rent 2 rooms we usually go for a condo/villa ;-)

Looking for sushi in all the wrong places

My husband and I really enjoy sushi and pulled into Lucy Ho%26#39;s on a whim. Should have passed by, I%26#39;m afraid. Not very clean, poor service, and the sushi was pitiful.

I think they make a mistake when they combine more than one cuisine and serving sushi is very different and difficult to serve well. Lucy Ho%26#39;s lumps Chinese and Japanese together and maybe serving a terrific General Tso%26#39;s Chicken but keeping fish at it%26#39;s raw peak is a tough job, slicing it properly is tougher, and creating the presentation is the toughest of all.

When people tell me they don%26#39;t like sushi, I often reply that they probably have never had it... correctly, that is. My first taste of sushi was a joint like Lucy Ho%26#39;s, room temperature dishes on stale clusters of sticky rice lined up like a death squad. Then a South African friend practically kidnapped us to try a place he knew and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

Does anyone know a really good place in Tallahassee? We%26#39;re not from the area but we visit quite often and would love to have a regular place to enjoy this great cuisine.

On top of the pitiful meal we had the owner brought one of two beers we had ordered and mumbled something about the other that we couldn%26#39;t understand. Twenty minutes later he arrived with the other which apparently he had to chill first. I don%26#39;t know any one who wants to drink ';chilly'; beer. We always drink them cold!

Looking for sushi in all the wrong places

I suggest Osaka Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar. It is on Raymond Diehl Rd. between Thomasville and Capital Circle. Just turn left at the light after you go under I-10. It will be on your left in a small shopping center.

Looking for sushi in all the wrong places

I enjoy a trip to Masa on Monroe everytime I am in Tally visiting my daughter.

My favorite place to go for sushi is Kitcho. It%26#39;s in the Market Street plaza off of Timberlane Road. It%26#39;s very good and has always been fresh.

Try Jasmin Cafe downtown. Really Good!

I have been to Jasmine and Osaka and thought they were both good. Your comment about Lucy Ho is interesting and may cause you to want to avoid Masa, because I understand she owns it. However, a friend of mine who really enjoys sushi likes it...so go figure.

I do believe I would choose Jasmine over Osaka, though.

I agree on Kitcho and Osaka. I do like lucy hos sushi though

I ate at Masa last week. It was packed, so we sat at the bar. I thought the fish was a bit chewy. The restaurant itself was nice, but I%26#39;m still on the hunt for good sushi here too. Someone I know said Jasmine is great, so that%26#39;s my next stop.

There%26#39;s a relatively new place on ccne, next to Espositos called Tans I think. Inexpensive and not to bad. BTW, a warm welcome to the incoming students. deb

I have eaten at Lucy Ho%26#39;s for lunch on 3 or 4 occasions. I had sushi each time. Last 2 visits were disappointing. I probably will not return. Massa Restaurant is owned by the same people....but I have not tried it, yet.

Kitcho has MUCH better tasting sushi, but you will pay for it. It is more expensive but very, very good. Try it for lunch and I think you will see that the sushi tastes better that Lucy Ho%26#39;s.

  • Park Advice

I anm looking to holiday in orlando for the first time next year,i have to children aged 6 and 8 years old.

What parks do you think are a must for kids of this age?

Dont know whether to stay on international drive or in one of the Disney hotels any advice appreciated.

I am a bit dubious about driving as never driven abroad before, is a car essential if staying in disney?

    Sorry for all the questions.

    Thanks for any advice

    Park Advice

Hi, you should do all the parks they are all different and have things for everyone, if you choose a disney hotel you get transportation to the parks, but a car is a must especially if you want to see the rest of orlando, as you can choose where to eat and also for shopping it can be difficult to get to the malls/outlet without a car of course you can get a taxi but the costs add up. I dont drive but my daughter and sons girlfriend are both driving (just getting used to our automatic) this time so that the boys can go off to golf and we can go shopping!!! its not the same as driving over here honestly plenty of maps and the road signs are really good, one more thing sea world is a must (well everyone i know thinks so) we have done it every year no matter what. read some of the reviews for hotels, i was disappointed with disney all hotel rooms are the same didnt seem to justify the additional cost (thats purely my opinion of course) loads to choose from and after all you are only sleeping in them, some good ones on international drive with good facilities and they also do the shuttle buses to the parks as well but sometimes only one choice of time going and coming back.......i know you will enjoy it whatever you choose laura

    Park Advice

I too couldn%26#39;t justify the cost of staying on property, like Laura said you%26#39;re only sleeping there!

Also agree with Sea World - main tip I can give you is plan your day around the shows - some of the shows are only on once!

Don%26#39;t forget that if you want to make character dining reservations, this can be done 180 days in advance - Cinderella%26#39;s Royal Table is notoriously difficult to get, often booking up withing 3 minutes (we were VERY VERY VERY lucky to get reservations 18 weeks in advance).

We%26#39;ve always rented a car when we%26#39;ve gone, but to be honest, even if we were staying at Disney, we still would as there is so much to see and do that ISN%26#39;T Disney - including shopping, and you don%26#39;t want to load your bargains onto a cramped bus!

    Hi

We are going on thursday with two kids aged 7 %26amp; 6. We are staying in Disney (wilderness lodge) because we find it so much easier than driving. We do not worry about hiring a car and spend most of our time in Disney apart from one day at Sea World and one or two at Universal Studios.

If you stay in Disney you get free and regular transportation between all the parks and hotels and you are dropped off right outside the main entrance - it is more expensive to stay in a Disney hotel but I think this alone, with young kids, makes it worth the money.

Best parks depends on your kids - my daughter aged 6 loves the magic Kingdom and my son likes faster rides so likes Universal. But there is something for both of them in all parks.

    Hope this helps

    Trish

Mine were 9, 6 and 1 last year and they loved all of the parks. As far as the older two, they liked Islands of Adventure and Epcots World Showcase the best, but it all depends on your children%26#39;s interest.

Mine thought the Disney character stuff was too ';babyish'; for them and they love Marvel comics (Spiderman, Fantastic 4, X-Men, etc.) so IOA had more to offer. As far as Epcot, not all kids like that kind of thing, but mine are into learning about different cultures/countries (even though it%26#39;s just a theme park), so they loved the World Showcase.

Also, I think kids of any age will love the water parks.

Rent a car for sure. I can%26#39;t see you going all the way there and not wanting to do a bit of shopping, or visit SeaWorld andUniversal- both fun for those ages.

You can still stay at Disney if you want, just drive to the other places. Driving is pretty easy there, as is parking as the spaces are huge.

I%26#39;d rec staying in a Suite type hotel in LBV, like the Doubletree Suites near DTD, Staybridge Suites, or in a condo nearby like Cypress Pointe. More space, some of the suite places have free breakfasts, the condo places you can either cook a little or just do breakfast/drinks/snacks there and have a washer/dryer. Restaurants are walking distance nearby for the evenings.

Or go the whole hog and rent a townhouse or Villa someplace like Windsor Hills or Terre Verde. Lovely resort feel/amenities, your own space/pool/w/d, and all for less than one room in a Disney resort.

I personally wouldn%26#39;t stay on I drive myself. The restaurants and things there are fine, but most of the resorts there are past their best (but not all) and some are downright dangerous lately.

    Macys shopping discount

Did you know that at Macys you can get an extra 11% of all your shopping including whats already reduced?

All you have to do is go to customer services located in the girt wrapping dept and tell them you are an international visitor and hey presto they give you a card worth 11% off almost everything in store!!!

When we went I did not have any ID with me but that was not a problem I still get the card which I think is valid for 30 days.

Some of their sales are 40% off then take another 30% off then you take your 11% off as well so something which was $100 will only cost you $37.38

    (40% = $40, then -30% =$18 then -11% =$4.62 = total saved $62.62)

    Macys shopping discount

I got my Macys discount card too and with no valid ID. Wish all the shops did this.

    Macys shopping discount

Yeah, you can get this one every year...

we get a card as soon as we get our vouchers here in germany and we just have to show this card (no ID).

but if you look for good and popular brands you should check if it is cheaper than in the outlet malls...

sometimes they are more expensive even with the discount...

God knows I bang on about it all the time so everyone should by now lol!

But they ususally insist on some sort of ID like DL and PP. I saw one gal get turned down once w/o it. BNut you need your DL on you to drive a car in the US, and that%26#39;s pretty much the only easy way to get to a mall.

I think I get better deals than the outlets using it. A trip to Macy%26#39;s and Walmart would be enough for me to get everythiing I need, at cheap prices but I like shopping far too much to restrict myself like that ;-)

    dollar car rental car seats

hi all im flying into sandford airport with my husband and 2 children age 5 and 6 and we are hiring a car from dollar car rental just wondering if they supply car seats free of charge or if we would have to pay to hire them thinking of taking their bumper seats in the case

    dollar car rental car seats

They will charge you about $5 per day for each seat. We always take our own. The airline will put it in a clear plastic bag and you check it in with your luggage, they are not classed as part of your luggage allowance either.

    dollar car rental car seats

great thanks poppy it soon adds up we rae going for 15 days that would work out $150 will definitely take my own

    HI.

All car rental companies enforce the child safety policy in their lots .

They will not allow you to leave the rental point if you have a child in the vehicle that requires a safety seat , make sure you take one from home it works out a lot cheaper than their rentals .

hope you have a great time murphy.

Tides.we travel with little luggage and put our boosters in a bag.Does your 6 yer old need a booster in the US?

she has to have a booster in the uk and would feel safer if she was in one i will just take boosters with me and put them in my luggage when i travel to sanford thanks everyone i travel in 3 weeks and trying to remember ell the last minute details

When we went 2 years ago, Dollar charged $7 per day PER SEAT plus tax, the seat was absolutely filthy and not suitable at all, but it was the last one left so we had no choice.

Take your own, then you%26#39;re guaranteed that it%26#39;s ok.

take your own or pay the Platinum insurance which includes extras like car seats.

We hired a car seat a couple of years ago and it was a bit worse for wear so we now take our own, and our stroller - the airline should take them in the hold at no extra cost ( certainly Virgin do )

We took our own -- you can request a seat, but no one guarantees availability at time of pickup.

With our own, we always had the seat available (you can even gate-check it most of the time) -- and most importantly -- our child was comfortable in it, and we knew how to install it quickly and safely.

Nothing worse than standing on your head in the backseat of a hire car trying to get an unfamiliar seat buckled in, only to put your little one in and have a fit because it doesn%26#39;t feel right.

    closet timeshare to disney

    hello-what is the closet/nicest-timeshare near disneyworld-we need a 2 or 3 bedroom condo-thankyou for your help

    closet timeshare to disney

Notsure, bt Cypress Pointe is only 1.5 miles to DTD, only one mile to the east entrance. There are other timeshares nearby there too. BLuetree or something rings a bell. It%26#39;s just off Vineland RD.

    closet timeshare to disney

There are a couple Disney timeshare resorts on property, but rarely do they ever become available for exchange - although they to rent them out to the public. How close exactly do you want to be? Would you rather have nicest or closest? If you have children (any ages), I would suggest Orange Lake Resort. The resort is huge and they have beautiful/spacious two and three bedroom condos. They have a beautiful golf course, putt-putt, lake with water sports rentals, several pools, tennis courts, etc. They just completed River Island which is the newest section (condo%26#39;s here are supposed to be fabulous) with pools, lazy river, etc. A new road has recently been put in that supposedly makes getting to Disney quick and easy (just a few miles away). There website is www.olcc.com. The other place that I enjoy is the Marriott Grande Vista near Seaworld. Not as much activities, but the place is beautiful and so very comfy. It is only a few miles from downtown Disney. It is very easy to get to Disney without using I-4 and with virtually no traffic. You would go down Central Florida Parkway (East) to Turkey Lake Road, Left on 535 and an immediate right into Hotel Blvd. into Downtown Disney.

The one I mentionned is on 535/Vineland RD just past the disney east entrance west of i4 so is very very close.

I agree that the Orange CC is nice, but it%26#39;s a bit further west than you%26#39;d like I%26#39;m thinking. But check it on mapquest and see!

Hi. We have a timeshare at Hilton grand vacation Club on cold Harbour Drive near Seaworld. Its the best. You buy points and can stay anytime you want in a studio, one or two bed condo depending on how many points you buy.We have been going at least once each year for ages.

    Magic your way pass

We plan on visiting one park per day. Would the Magic your way base pass be ok. We saw one called park hopper, but don%26#39;t plan to be hopping around.

Might be a dumb question, but does this pass include all/most of the rides?

    Thanks in advance

    Magic your way pass

If you are not planning on hopping than a base pass it the way to go, We always hop, but this year we are going to spend each day in a diff park. When you hop you spend so much time waiting for the bus and then they take down all these back roads just to get you to another park, and then you have to back through security again and the ticket lines and it just takes to much time outta of your day,. Tip...... get to the parks at the time that they open and you get to ride the big rides with no wait. and yes it includes ALL the rides. have fun we are going Thanksgiving weekend

  • British Parants and other adults take note

Did you see CBS News last night.

Where a mother of some boys who were under the legal age of 21 to buy and drink alcohol was jailed for 27 months.

The sentence was given because she as an ';Adult '; supplied Booze to ';Minors'; for a party .

And allowed it to take place ';In her ';Own Home';.

Se told the court she had done this to stop the 18 and 20 year old getting it illegally and going out and drinking it where they hang out with their mates.

So they would not be driving and on the public highways, under age, and under the influence threatening others lives

She managed to get a reduced sentence but still has to serve 20 months.

It would seem some districts have patrols out looking for just such parties and places where the underage hang out drinking.

It did say how many states have this law, Florida being one.

But it is now being considered to make it a law in every state.

The police patrols would have a field day over here there would hardly be a club pub or off licence left open.

Club owners %26amp; Licenced victuallers would be up in alms. but ( behind bars)

What are the laws about drinking there?

Can you drink at all under the age of 21?

I will be 17 while there and sometimes at home I share wine with my mum.

    What is allowed there?

British Parants and other adults take note

The legal drinking age in every state in the U.S. is 21. Liquor stores and restaurants enforce this by checking IDs of anyone who looks under the age of 35.

    No alcohol under 21.

    hi xr

as an owner of a franchised off licence believe me i would not be up in arms at all. monitoring under age sales is something we take VERY seriously and monitor strictly. all our staff have to take a four week traing package and then be tested on licencing law as a reqiurement of working in our store refreshed every 3 months . every time the do not see id if someone does not look over 21 they have to record it in a refusals book i have spent over 拢5000 on a cctv system which records every sale so we can check what is being sold to who, i can also watch from home on this laptop in fact i can watch any where in the world where there is broadband.

i am fed up telling our local police and trading standards that there is a BIG problem of adults who will come into to stores to buy for under age kids who have asked them to ';proxy purchase'; for them (i have numerous instances stored on the hard drive of the cctv system) but for reasons unknown to me and other store owners nothing seems to be done about this

please dont think all licenced busines%26#39;s are like the minority that make the press because they have been caught on a test purchase because believe me we are not

Paulc2521; I do agree with you that a big problem here is that of Adults who are old enough to buy Alcohol; and cigarettes are suppliers Minors.

In the US this is a punishable offence .And this is what that mother was mainly done for.

If the boys had got it themselves illegally the sentence might not have been as big.

The one thing the the government could do is to make supplying to minors illegal.

Mind you someone who is very near to me, her kids before they were left school were going int clubs in Donny at weekend and buying whatever booze and fags they wanted, and still are and they are not 18 till Christmas.

All British parents out there do take this to heart, as you can be prosecuted. The mistake this parent made was to allow a party where children (not her own) were served without their parents permission and were turned in and made an example of.

I myself have my own views about his new puritain system, and do feel that the original intention of getting alcohol out of the high schools was not very well thought through.

I am american citizen, and grew up in the US when the stardard law/practice in most states was that beer and wine could be consumed/bought from age 18, and spirits/fortified wines etc was 21. the max for beer was 3.2 % alcohol. given that a proprotion of teens will be age 18 before leaving their last year of school (grade 12) they thought that this would stop teens drinking.

It hasn%26#39;t. And they either get it illegally thru forged ID, paying proxy adults, crooked stores, friends, parents at home, etc. They therefore drive to get it, drink outside wherever, and are generally unsafe. This does not take into account ( I have never seen a study done) as to how many 18-20 yr olds will look to cannabis or other drugs as they are equally illegal rather than choosing a beer like they migh have before the change.

They are deemed old enough to be adults in that they can vote for a president, can join the armed forces and die on a foreign field, and can get married, or can generally have sexual relations with another consenting adult. You can be held accountable as an adult, and executed for a capital crime from the age of 16 or younger in some states.

I find most if not all of these activites are more needing of adult responsibility than drinking a 3.2% beer in a controlled home setting myself. And there is now more profit to be made by irresposible adults (ie proxys, stores or drug dealers) than there would be if they either started school at age 4-5 insted of 5-6, or made the legal age to drink beero or wine 19. Both of these measures would have taken alcohol out of a school environment as well. And this doesn;t take into account the caseof a mother thinking she might be more protective of her child drinking where she could keep a watch over him and keep hom and others safe. What if he%26#39;d gone out to drink and killed someone in the family car? Would he/she have gotten less time in jail than their mother?

Think about it, it isn%26#39;t until your 3rd to 4th year of university before you can legally drink a beer there now. Just plain stupid IMHO.

Don%26#39;t know if this is still the case but on our very first visit in %26#39;93 we went into a supermarket to do some food shopping. We also had a pack of 4 beers which my then 5 year old was carrying to the check out for us. I remember the lady at the checkout telling us he should not even be carrying the alcohol and that when we got back to our car it should be packed in the boot (trunk?!!) of the car. This took us by surprise but we did as we were advised and have done so on every visit since.

Our children are now grown up (19 and 22) and only the oldest has ever been able to enjoy an alcoholic beverage while on holiday stateside ;) and that was on her 21st birthday in New York!

    Debs

Many states have laws about alcohol being locked in the trunk AND in some states, there are no open container allowed even locked in the trunk! The police generally have more than enough to do getting drunks off the road, but it%26#39;s the kind of thing that can cause problems if you%26#39;re stopped for some other infraction.

My personal opinion, that sentence was wildly excessive. Unfortunately, there have been deaths at parties for the under age where kids have dies of alcohol poisoning and interaction in prescription drugs. It was very foolish and she was lucky no tragedy did occur. It seems every year we have a number of underage drinking parties thrown at fraternities and other places at various colleges where alcohol poisoning has caused deaths and serious illness, sometimes permanent damage. The police take a VERY dim view of things.

All that said, we are once again considering lowering the drinking age to 18.

    Hi XR759.

    Thanks for pointing this out.

We go to Florida 1st of Nov this year. We are taking my youngest now 18 yrs old and his friend who is 21.

Does this mean then that if we go shopping and purchase beer and some wine (for my wife), and take it back to the villa, is my 18 yr old son allowed to consume the beer inside the Villa that we have rented or around the pool area.

I would like to clarify this point before we go.

Thanks to all who help in response to this matter.

    Personally,

I think they should lower it to at least 19 if not 18. There were alcohol poisoning incidents at college when I was there and drinking was allowed- excess is excess. I think there are maybe more now- who knows.

One big thing I did notice was, I went to university in the south. A lot of the local kids had little or no experience in drinking/knowing thier limits. Those of us from up north or places where drinking was acceptable (ie not prohibited due to religion) actually drank less when we did drink. So we got into less trouble, less accidents etc than those who were let on the loose for the first time with no parents around to notice. In Europe, kids have small amounts of alcohol from a much younger age as part of a meal, and I believe that attitude helps with binge drinking (ie drinking to get as drunk as possible). Just something to think about.

  • Safe in water??

Is it safe to go swimming in the waters around the islands.??

    %26#39;Jaws%26#39; comes to mind.

    Safe in water??

Yes, just as ';safe'; as the ocean everywhere else. There are sting rays, sharks, dolphins, and other sea creatures - just keep your wits about you.

    Safe in water??

Here%26#39;s a piece of wisdom from a SCUBA diver in Hawaii - When you enter the water you become a part of the food chain.

Sanibel has safe and quiet water - but like any open water it has jellyfish, sharks, stingrays [small kind], and a variety of other hazards - including gators. I know gators are fresh water creatures, but they can and will swim on the Gulf far a wide range of reason. Between May and November it is generally wise to stay out of the water from dusk to dawn. That%26#39;s when sharks are most active.

There are NO lifeguards anywhere on Sanibel, so it%26#39;s swim at your own risk. Avoid the area where water runs from bay to Gulf. The undertow can be very strong at these points. Enjoy the calm Gulf, but pay attention.

Marine predators in the waters of Sanibel/Captiva are enjoying a fantastic supply of fish. In fact, the dolphins in these waters do not even migrate to find food, but rather stay all year long.

What it tells us with regards to sharks is that they are unlikely to change their diet and go for your yummy legs.

However, common sense always prevails as Tourmaline puts it.

Indeed it is better to avoid Dusk/Dawn, do not swim next to fishermen (wounded fish attract sharks), and shuffle your feet when you enter the water to scare away stingrays.

I have been swimming and fishing in Sanibel for the past 10 years and never saw a shark.

A girl was bitten this week in Sarasota Bay, necessitating over 100 stitches to her midsection. She was in the water just after dark, on a dark night. I swim every summer on Anna Maria Island. Never any kind of problem, but swim during the day, and do the stingray shuffle.

I%26#39;ve never heard of a shark attack off of Sanibel, Captiva, or Ft. Myers Beach. I read somewhere that Lee County has only had three shark attacks since 1970 so it is definately an extremely rare occurence. Also, in all three cases the shark bit once and swam away so technically they weren%26#39;t even ';attacks.'; They were just bites. They also have a chart that rates Florida%26#39;s coastal counties from most dangerous to least dangerous when it comes to shark attacks. Lee was pretty much at the bottom of list so it is extremely rare.

I%26#39;ve never thought about becoming part of the food chain, Tourmaline, but you are right! Kinda puts things into perspective!

That being said, I asked pretty much the same question before we went to Sanibel. I was freaked out about sharks and gators and never saw one! We even went on a tour of Ding Darling and STILL didn%26#39;t see any alligators.

We did see a stingray that someone had caught out on the 3rd sandbar. It was about 2%26#39;X2%26#39;. We did the shuffle after that. Never had a problem.

There isn%26#39;t anything in the water that sees you as food. Period.

The girl who was bitten last week was on the local television last night, laughing and well on the way to recovery, and joking that she was thinking about getting a tattoo, but now she has really cool-looking scars instead. (I couldn%26#39;t make that one up!) Keep in mind that they were NOT swimming off the beach, but from a boat in a bay, at night.

If it eases your mind, think about how many people are in the water in Florida on any given day -- and how few are ever bitten -- and of them, how few don%26#39;t live to tell the tale (precious few -- it makes news because it%26#39;s so rare.)

The experts say you%26#39;re more likely to be struck by lightning than to be bitten by a shark -- and you%26#39;re more likely to be kicked by a donkey than to be struck by lightning. How%26#39;s that for odds? I%26#39;ll take that risk.

Where to stay for a family

We were due to go to Cancun on Monday but because of Dean we cancelled. I managed to get a flight to Tampa and I now have 1 day to sort out a place to stay.

Where should I go? St Pete%26#39;s or Clearwater. I%26#39;m looking for a resort that caters for a 16/13 kids. Any good hotels?

    Quick advice would be welcomed.

    Philip

Where to stay for a family

Hi try the Marriott Suites on Sandkey Clearwater. We were there in July with teens 17 and 15 they loved the hotel which is all suites with a great pool and great views of the bay. The Jolly Trolley stops outside which takes you in to Clearwater Pier 60 for 5 dollars, loads of good resturants. The harbour with The Sea Screamer boat and Parasailing. Hope this helps.

Where to stay for a family

Tradewinds Grand - St. Petes beach - 30 min from Tampa Airport - best place for kids - pizza hut and ice cream on property - 3 pools, kids club and huge water slide and free aqua bikes and boats. Only place to go!!! Be sure to do Captain Nemo%26#39;s pirate cruise and visit the tampa aquarium - great for kids - take your swim suit they have a water play area. I have a 6 and 8 year old and it was perfect.

What's the best restroom in Key West?

    Ok, I%26#39;m joking.

    My point is, we get a lot of posting here asking, ';What is the BEST....?';

questions. They are silly questions, really, because what I might consider the best others might consider mediocre. It%26#39;s all a matter of personal taste. Requests for more specific info after doing some basic research will most likely get you better responses, as well as fewer sarcastic comments.

This is a very helpful forum, and most of us really want to help people have a good vacation.

What's the best restroom in Key West?

Well said Sim. I would also go a little farther and hope that the people answering are taking into consideration what the poster is asking and try to give them some ideas on what would meet their wants instead of pushing one or two places only.

What's the best restroom in Key West?

One thing I alway%26#39;s assume when someone asks for the ';best'; is they just don%26#39;t know how many places in Key West there are to eat, sleep, drink, etc. In order to answer a ';the best'; question you would have to eat, sleep or drink at all or these places. Is there anyone person who post here that can say this.

I have read reviews that say ';this place is the best'; and it the only place they have stayed.

    PJ

I suggest lots of places I have not stayed or eaten at, based on others suggesting them, or having seen them while in KW. I WILL give honest opinions of places I have stayed, but just cuz I stayed there doesn%26#39;t mean it%26#39;s the ';best'; for the person looking for advice.

';Best'; is very subjective, especially with all that KW has to offer.

Years ago I like the graffiti covered restroom at Capt Tony%26#39;s. Not for function, but for its intrinsic art value. Then someone had the bright idea to paint it over. I wonder if the graffiti has returned?

Oh wait, this thread is not actually about restrooms.

    Ez,

They always paint over it and it always returns.

Usually the closest one... lol... but yes it%26#39;s all in the eye of the beholder... better to ask a specific question about a place to stay, to eat etc. I MISS KW

or in the eyes of the bladder!

After a few beers on the beach and no where to go !

    GO FOR A SWIM LOL

I have to respond to the actual original quesiton, even if it wasn%26#39;t serious, because I remember being at the Conch Republic and seeing the funniest saying written on the wall there, next to where someone had originally scrawled ';ROLL TIDE';:

    ';Roll Tide. Around the bowl, down the hole. Roll, Tide, roll.';

I%26#39;m going to guess the best may be in the Marquesa but can%26#39;t confirm that. I may stop and ask if they have a restroom I can use next trip :-)

I am however positive the WORST is in Margaritaville.

I%26#39;m assuming you are staying at the Wynfield Inn Convention Center? If so, you could go to Florida Mall, they have hair salons there. Or if you don%26#39;t have a car, call the hotel directly and ask them. 407-345-8000

Clarion Hotel Maingate or Comfort Suites Maingate Resort?

    What do u%26#39;all recommend?

Clarion Hotel Maingate or Comfort Suites Maingate Resort?

Of the two you listed, the Comfort Suites Main Gate gets far better reviews- the most recent reviews for Clarion are horrid. There is also a Comfort Suites Maingate East listed that also gets good reviews. Haven%26#39;t stayed at any of these myself, but based on reviews I%26#39;d try for either of those two Comfort Suites. Have you looked at the reviews on this site? Hi Amanx. You are close. Im a vet.

    Trip report Part 2

Well thanks for reading my 1st report here is our 2nd week

Saturday we. . . urm . . . went SHOPPING again, I bought no 1 daughter a prom dress for next year with shoes and bag to match I know its early but at less then 拢50 for the lot I just could not leave it there. Daughters bought more Converse and also had a spend in the Disney shop. Then later we went back to the car cruise in Kissimmee as the 1st time we went we were so not with it we forget to take cameras so had to buy a disposible 1.

Sunday we went to Islands of Adventure. Husband and girls did all the rides execpt Hulk as a storm threatened as they had done every thing we hopped across to studios to have some cheesecake. the cheesecake factory at Universal Studios is just as you go in on the right nr where you view your photos.

Monday we went to Seaworld didn%26#39;t manage to do all the shows but did do Shamu and Shamu rocks plus the fireworks.

Tuesday out with my friend again and this time she took us on an airboat ride. That was fantastic it was alittle too hot for the %26#39;Gaters but we did see 1 about 10 feet long. Had lunch at Steak n Shake I think it was somewhere nr Melbourne (I%26#39;m good at this am I not lol)

Wednesday we did IOA again and yes we had cheesecake again!!

We did eat other things as well I promise.

    Thursday we had a Drive around and did a little bit more . . . . . . . .

yes you%26#39;ve guessed it shopping. In the afternoon we went to see about a helicopter ride but the 1 on I Drive would only take 3 at a time, not much good for famlies of 4. So it ment another drive down to KIssimmee but at least we colud all go together. Iam glad I did it but don%26#39;t thing I would rush to do it again. I am ok then they go in A straight line but its all the up n down and turning. Husband and daughters enjoyed it and it is worth tipping the pilot as you get on as seem to get a better trip. The family after us had booked then same tour as us but must not have tipped as they were not in the air as long as we had been.

Friday was our last full day so we went back to Universal did all the best bits from both parks. Husband and daughters finally managed to do Duelling Dragons were they both went round together. Both the other times they did it they went round on their own. Surely the whole point is they go round together but at least they managed it before we came home.

Saturday was home day so it was breakfast then to the airport. Again we sailed through and the flight was on time. Arriving back in Manchester we had over 1 hour to wait for out luggage, not realy what you want at 4.35 on a Sunday morning.

    I hope you have enjoyed this posting and can I thank everybody who helped with my questions before we went. This was ment to be a once in a lifetime holiday but as Arnie says %26#39;I%26#39;ll be back%26#39;

    Trip report Part 2

know what you mean about trip of a life time, we said that last year, but will be back at the end of october and can t wait

    Trip report Part 2

We should tip the helicopter pilot? I%26#39;ll add that to the tipping list! How much did you tip the pilot?

Great report jmc - sounds like you had a fab time! Bet it has been really depressing to come back to this shocking weather. sounds like you will be booking again shortly!

    Trish

Yes we tipped the pilot but we only tipped $20, the trip was $171 so it was only 11.7%

hI we go 6 oct.4nov, am so glad you have wrote were cheesecake factory is, we have been twice and neve hurd of it till i saw on here, cant wait to try it i love cheese cake.humhum.angiex

The sandwiches were quite nice as well but the cheesecake was great for supper as we only had 2 meals a day then either cheesecake or ice cream or something for supper

Can you remember where you went for the airboat ride, and would you recommend it? We definitely want one, but don%26#39;t know which one to use!!

It was about 1.5 hours drive away nr Melbourne/ Palm bay area only saw 1 %26#39;gater as it was way too hot. There are airboat rides closer we were going to do the 1 at Boggy Creek but wanted a day with my friend so this was nearer for her. Put a search in topic and there are quite a few reviews about more local ones.

Great reports, wondered how you found steak and shake ? Nice food ? Is it easy to find ?

    Susan

The steak n shake was on the main route through Melbourne. food was good cost $46 for 5 steak burgers with all the trimmings a choice of 2 sides and a classic shake.

  • nassau suite hotel

    Hello,

have anyone heard about nassau suite hotel in SOBE? or has been recently? please give me an advice!!

    cheers

    nassau suite hotel

    Hi Monchy,

I have not stayed here but I have booked this hotel in October. I have read the reviews and they seem to be pretty positive. The room size and full kitchen seem key. Also the location is very close to Lincoln and Ocean. I got a good deal off of expedia. Hope this helps! :)

    nassau suite hotel

My husband and I stayed there in %26#39;05, February or March, I think, and we would stay there again in a minute.

The rooms are spacious, with kitchen, and the location is perfect. We don%26#39;t ever rent a car, but they do have a parking lot next to the hotel- unusual in South Beach. You can walk everywhere from here!

There%26#39;s a nice front porch, a computer with free internet access in the basement and it%26#39;s really affordable.

It%26#39;s not a luxury hotel, I wouldn%26#39;t say, but it%26#39;s very clean and the rooms are so nice! 1 block from the beach, too!

    I would recommend it-

Friends of mine who live in Miami say that the 2 hotels they would recommend in SOBE are the Impala and the Nassau Suites. They know loads of people who have stayed there and they all loved it.

Actually, i will be on a vacation in Florida in Florida for 2 weeks , and have booked both at the Impala for 2 days and at the Nassau Suites for another 2 on my way home.

thanks for your suggestion!!! I will go ahead and book it..

    Jellyfish and Sea Nettles

We just had some friends that came back from the Orange Beach, AL area...which is closeby....and they were talking about there being jellyfish and sea nettles. We%26#39;ve stayed further east (Destin and Panama City) and didn%26#39;t notice that.

    Can anyone comment on this?

    Jellyfish and Sea Nettles

Sorry...left off that we have plans to come to the beach area there soon.

    Jellyfish and Sea Nettles

Its the time of year. Pensacola has jellies too. we were just there last weekend.

Yup, the jellies are out in full force this year. Bring some meat tenderizer to soothe the sting.

My family just got home from Topsail Hill Preserve and grandaughter was stung by a jellyfish. They are also on the beach so be careful where you walk!!

The jellies were there, yes, but in rapidly decreasing numbers. We noticed the small, clear, thus hard to spot, jellies and the bigger reddish-pink variety. Those were easy to avoid. My daughter was stung once but it didn%26#39;t keep her out of the water for very long nor did it require meat tenderizer. I understand that helps though. We stayed at the Hilton. Great place for a weekend but a little rowdy for the little ones so keep them away from the folks propping up the bar and adjacent pool area.

which hotel chains are closest to disney

Im not sure at this point if we are going to go with a Disney hotel or not but can you please let me know which hotel chain is closest to Disney? Which road or highway should I be looking for that is closest and a decent place to stay. We are also looking for a 2 room suite under $200 if possible and looking for a nice pool area for the kids. Is Staybridge Suites or Fairfield Inn in a reasonable distance?

which hotel chains are closest to disney

Look for hotels on hwy 192 as close as possible to World Drive. Actually anywhere on hwy 192 that is West of I-4 would be good.

Also read the Kissimmee forum as this is really closer to WDW than Orlando and there are many suitable places to stay in K.

Ginger, were you planning to rent a car ? One of the Perks to staying on Disney Property is that you will have free transportation to all the Disney Parks. Sorry, can%26#39;t remamber if you were only doing Disney Parks or not.

If you plan to rent a car we can give you more ideas on where to stay outside of Disney.

We%26#39;ll be staying at Staybridges Suites in LBV in January. According to the Unofficial Guide, these are the driving times to each of the parks:

    Magic Kingdom 14:15

    Epcot 9:30

    MGM 12:00

    Animal Kingdom 12:30

Add about 4 minutes to each of the above times if you stay at the Fairfield Inn according to UG.

Sorry - forgot to add that Staybridge does provide a free shuttle but we%26#39;re renting a car for more flexibility.

Country Inn %26amp; Suites is right t the gate of the Disney Property on 535. It is like 5 mins from DownTown Disney. They have kid suites with bunkbeds and there own little area in the room just for them, they have an outside pool and the best, FREE BREAKFAST!!!!!! We have stayed at this hotel twice, we paid 114 a night and it is surrounded by resturants. I think that if you do not wanna stay on property than this is ideal place for you.

also look at cypress pointe lake buena vista they have 1, 2, and 3 bed condos. Dont go for the 1 bed as its really small.

We are staying there in Oct, lovely pool area for the children.

There is also springhill suites marriott village you get a free breakfast there and shuttles to disney.

    Hope this helps

chuts %26amp; party pa, thanks for the info. we will be driving down so I wouldnt need a car.

Surgie I was looking at Staybridge Suites as it looked really nice.

Dirtyfeet,. thanks also for the recommendation, I called for a price quote and its very very reasonable. I love the kids bunk bed suites with the little work desk (i saw a picture on their website).

Can you tell me are any of the rooms private such as is there a door from the bedroom to living room. I read there was a 3/4 divider between the bunk bed room and king bed. I know the kids would just love the room.

It%26#39;s me, yes the County Inn %26amp; Suites also has a master suite. It has a kin sized ned in a room with a door and then the bath room and you have a couch and the tv in like a little living room that can pull out to a bed, you have a tv in the room with the bed too. also both either a sids suite or the king suite they have 2 tvs and they have a fridge, microwave for no xtra charge. and with the kids suite they have a games system and vcr and you can get diff games and movies for the kids at the from desk with no xtra charge and again free breakfast and it is not have bad. Great place to stay. Let me know what you decide. when are you going? we are going week of thanksgiving. never been that time of year.

Dirtyfeet we wouldnt be going until next summer but I want to start making plans. I love the kids suite but when I called to speak to the reservationist she said the suite is only private by a small partition which wouldnt be good for us since we have 5 all together. Im a little disappointed but we may wind up going with the King bedroom suite. Are there any restaurants or shops within walking distance? Also does the Sheraton allow you to use their pool?

Yes, there is like a make shift wall there that devides the kids from the adults, maybe the king suite is more to what you are looking for. I dont think that you can use the other hotels pool, that is a question for there customer service. It is a very nice hotel I think that you will enjoy. Resturants. there is a joes crabshack right across the street. there is a mexican, redlobster, pizza, and many otheres right there, the pizza place was very good. hope that this helps.
