We will be in Key West in Oct and want to go fishing. We are trying to decide what kind of fish we want to catch. Is Tarpon fishing considered light tackle or offshore?

You usually catch Tarpon near the flats. They are around that time of year but they like the spring a little better.

the sailfish start coming in in Oct. That is tons of fun. The best thing to do would be to talk to a charter and ask them what the best fishing is for when you want to fish. You can fish both offshore and backcountry in Oct, decide which ou would rather do and then start looking for guides/capts.

To answer your question, Tarpon fishing is done from light tackle boats. They are much more agile to chase the fish around while you%26#39;re fighting it. Not an easy task....Tarpon have no teeth and the cartiledge in their mouths is like steel....hard to set a hook.

In cooler October waters, if you choose offshore, dolphin may have thinned by then. Sails are extremely fun to catch and release, but not reliable to find.

Thank you for this info. We have been bill fishing in Mexico and LOVED IT. I do like the suggestion of calling and asking the charter about the fishing, we will do this.

I have some offshore fishing charter suggestions from this group, how about light tackle charters? Any suggestions?

And one more question, can you charter private snorkeling trips? I think I rather do this then go on a boat with 50 people.

If you book one of the other snorkeling trips you won%26#39;t be alone, but based on the time of year and the trip, you%26#39;d only be with a few other people. And this is a lot of fun.
