Miami to Key Largo and Key West via Hire Car

Hi,

My friend and I are going to be in Miami from the 10th of August to the 16th. We are looking at spending a day driving down to Key West to stay on either the Monday or Tuesday.

Obviously, this is possible. Wondering what sort of travel times we are looking at? Want to stop and snorkell at Key Largo, then drive down to Key West to stay and drink that night. Drive back to Miami the next morning.

On top of that, is there gas stations on the way down? Any ideas on price for fuel and what sort of price as well to hire a car for 24 hours?

Thanks in advance.

Burkey.

If you drove straight thru from Miami to Key West it is about a 4 hour drive. It is about 1 hour from Miami to Key Largo. Plenty of gas stations. Gas is maybe 10 cents a gallon higher at some stations but many are the same as anywhere else in Florida, which right now is $2.80 per gallon. I would post on the Miami forum to find out about rental car rates.

Call your hotel as they may have a car rental office on property or nearby. You don%26#39;t need to go back to the airport for a rental car.

I must drive more slowly. Depending on where you are in Miami, I think it%26#39;s closer to 1.5 to Key Largo. I agree it%26#39;s about 3 hours from Key Largo to Key West.

For snorkelling, check out John Pennekamp State Park. They have a noon trip. That puts you back on land about 2. They have an outdoor shower there. You%26#39;ll be in KW before sunset.

On the way back, stop at Robbie%26#39;s - - mile marker 77 bayside. These giant wild tarpon (fish) come there every day. You buy a bucket of bait and feed them. It%26#39;s such a ';Keys experience';

Have a great trip.

I think you are right keysmom, and 1 1/2 is probably correct for getting to Key Largo. It seemed to go quicker now that a good portion of the road is wider. We did not have a lot of traffic going down either. We were there first week of June so just missed all the holiday traffic.

From reading other posts on this forum I believe car hire (or car rental as Americans say) rates vary for non Americans renting in the USA. I think you are better off making arrangements for car rental before you arrive.

The location of your hotel in Miami may be important in choosing a car rental company, as someone else wrote, so that you don%26#39;t have to go all the way bck to the airport to get a car. Most car rental agencies have multiple locations, but you might choose one tyhat has a location convenient to your hotel.

Miami- Key Largo 1-1.5 hours depending on where you are in Miami.

Key Largo to Key West 2-3 hours depending on how the service is in the bars you stop at. Just kidding, don%26#39;t drink and drive. Wait till you get to KW, but get there in time to check into your hotel and get to Mallory Square for the sunset celebration.

There are all the gas stations you need, plan on $3.00 per gallon.

Book the car before you come , comparing prices on line.

Have fun, KW is special.
